Because temperatures in February and March were above average in most parts of Japan, the cherry blossoms are opening several days ahead of their average schedule this year. The season started particularly early on Kyushu, where Fukuoka saw cherry trees open their blossoms on March 13, almost two weeks earlier than average. With the mercury rising over 20 degrees over large parts of Japan on March 19 again, blossoms opened in Kagoshima, Nagoya and Kyoto. Tokyo followed on March 21.
Below are the forecast dates of cherry trees opening their blossoms this year (according to the Japan Meteorological Agency) and the estimated best viewing periods (estimated by japan-guide.com).
Temperatures, rain and wind can have a strong effect on the process of the season, for example, they can delay or shorten it considerably. Therefore, use the forecasts on your own risk.

As of March 21, 2009 The cherry blossom (sakura) is Japan's unofficial national flower. It has been celebrated for many centuries and holds a very prominent position in Japanese culture.
There are many dozens of different cherry tree varieties in Japan, most of which bloom for just a couple of days in spring. The Japanese celebrate that time of the year with hanami (cherry blossom viewing) parties under the blooming trees.
