Manufacturers sent 4.08 million cell phones to Japanese stores in January and for the first time the number of 2G models was zero. Japanese stores continue to offer a small number of 2G phones, but it is almost impossible for new users to start fresh subscriptions. Some 20 million Japanese now have phones to watch digital broadcasts, which major broadcasters offer for free.
