Established in 770 by a student of the Chinese priest Ganjin with the principal image that of Bishamon-ten one of the Seven Lucky Gods. During the Heian period (794-1185) it was a guardian temple for the direction north. The Main Hall 2-storied pagoda and other structures have been rebuilt in reinforced concrete. Kurama Sanrei Ho-den: 1st Flr.-Natural Science Museum with exhibits of local flora fauna minerals etc. / 2nd Flr. -a temple treasure room; Yosano Kinen-shitsu displaying artifacts belonging to Yosano Akiko (http://kaiwai.city.kyoto.jp/search/view_sight.php?InforKindCode=3&ManageCode=1000117) an early 20th-century poet / 3rd Flr.-Buddhist images including Bishamon-ten (National Treasure); treasure storage room. Along the path to the Okuno-in behind the Main Hall is a marker relating to Minamoto Yoshitsune.
